Air operated powder pumps are used for small-batch transfer of light, fine, and dry powder materials. They are based on an air-operated diaphragm pump, with an added pulse air circuit designed for powder conveying. The working principle includes two main parts:
- Powder Transfer System
The powder transfer system works from the basic structure of an air-operated diaphragm pump. Compressed air drives the diaphragms back and forth, creating the movement needed to draw powder into the pump and push it upward through the valve seat and valve ball area.
- Control System
The control system manages the pulse air used for powder movement. It includes a 5/2-way air control valve, air filter, two-way solenoid valve, ball valve, pressure regulator, and other auxiliary parts.
During operation, auxiliary air enters through a three-way connection and reaches the pressure regulators on both sides. Part of the air goes into chamber C in the upper cover, while the rest enters the 5/2-way air control valve. From there, the airflow is divided into side air passages A and B, as well as the inner plates marked a’ and b’.
- Air entering through a’ shifts the air control valve and passes through the check valve into chamber A. As chamber A fills with air, the diaphragm moves to the left, and the air passing through the valve seat and valve ball area pushes the powder upward.
- Air entering through b’ follows the same process on the opposite side. It shifts the air control valve, passes through the check valve into chamber B, and moves the diaphragm to the right. Air then passes through the valve seat and valve ball area, pushing the powder upward again.
As this cycle repeats, powder continues moving upward through the pump until the transfer process is complete.
- Air operated powder pumps transfer powder through a closed conveying path, reducing workshop dust, operator contact, and material loss, especially when handling toxic or hazardous powders.
- Sealed transfer lets powder move directly from the container to the formulation or mixing area, reducing material loss and keeping the work area cleaner.
- A patented 120° angled flow path gives light powder more room to pass through and helps reduce clogging compared with traditional 90° flow path designs.
- Equipped with a no-dead-spot air valve and automatic airflow distribution system that help the pump start smoothly, while the fluidization system reduces the chance of sudden powder discharge.
- The conveying process reduces the compaction and caking often seen in traditional pressure transfer, so powder moves more smoothly and blockages are less likely to occur.
- Fluidizing and conveying airflow can be controlled separately, limiting direct air contact during transfer for powders that may oxidize or absorb moisture.
- Powder pumps are easy to move and place in different working areas, so installation and adjustment take less time.
- Air operated powder pumps reduce the need for manual powder transfer, so operators spend less effort handling materials and the process stays cleaner.
Air operated powder pumps are used when dry powders need to move from one point to another with less dust, less manual handling, and better control during transfer. They are suitable for materials such as:
- Inorganic powders: silica, nano calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, basic zinc carbonate, and activated clay.
- Organic powders: resin powder, acrylic resin, and other light organic powder materials.
- Chemical additives: plasticizers, flame retardants, and related powder additives.
- Pharmaceutical and chemical raw materials: solid sodium methoxide, pharmaceutical intermediates, and other dry raw materials that require controlled transfer.
